Stay in the park, and get your reservations NOW. Sometimes its hard to get a room, keep checking back for cancellations if they dont have something. The park is huge, it can take 2+ hours to get from Cody to Old Faithfull. You also need to be off the roads by dark so you dont hit a buffalo or elk.

We also stayed 2 nights in the Old Faithful area and 2 nights in the Canyon area. There are cabins and other lodging in those areas besided the historic lodging. We would go out early, see a lot of stuff before the crowds from outside the park arrived. we would go back to our room and rest while the sites were packed, then go back out late afternoon/evening and see some more while the crowds were leaving. This was in early Aug when we had long days.

We would pack stuff for a picnic lunch. Some of the sites are a long ways from any restaurant, but there are a lot of picknic areas scattered about, so you can eat lunch where you're at and not have to drive back to a lodge at noon. Most of the main attractions have bathrooms, or more often vault toilets.

We also stayed one night in a cabin on a lake in the Grand Tetons. Not cheap, but one of my favorite memories, sitting on the porch, watching a full moon cross the Grand Tetons.

Town of Jackson was a tourist trap full of people, couldnt wait to get out of there
