Texas | I have a blackleg problem.
It lives in the soil for years. Doesn’t even matter if you’ve never had cows on a piece. The deer move it around. Any dead’s need to be hauled off.
We use covexin 8 (but you can’t get it right now)
If you have an outbreak give them a vax and a penecillin shot (big one) The pen will protect them until the vax takes hold.
It’s pointless to vax a newborn, the colostrum it’s getting from mama makes the vax a moot point.
It will flare after a rain following a drought. The calves are susceptible during periods of rapid growth. I’ve never seen one still nursing as its primary food source to get it. Usually 5wt or so.
Never feed cattle on the ground, even range cubes go in a bunk.
