South Central IN | A few years back, we redid our cattle corral and it was a big improvement. However, I’ve never been pleased with the way cattle flow into our working chute. It currently isn’t a bud box or true sweep, but a poor compromise of both. The gate opens wide to let a group in (usually 4 head), then crowd them with the gate as it makes a V shape. I’ll put a couple pictures to show the current setup and the last one was an idea to change it.
In the pictures,
-Cattle movement is the yellow
-Gates are in green
-Blue would be a change to the guard rail fence to let the gate swing the other way.
-Currently, the pen before cattle enter the chute is about 16’ wide and 20’ long.
I’ve read that in a true bud box, a person can stand to force cattle to the back then peel them off one by one to enter the exit. However, all those diagrams have the exit at 90° from the bud box. Can it work in a different position? My change would have it opposite the dead end where the cattle turn around. I think I’m also a little too wide.
What do you think? Any workable solutions? Thanks!
Don
