We have had a couple of Brother laser printers.

Forget what caused the previous one to quit, but current is   MFC-L2710DW     [Mono]

We use non generic toner carts, no problems.

It has just given a message that it needs a new drum, and that will be non generic also.

I don't know about ink jet [ we also have a colour Canon for photos] but the printers themselves are no dearer that a set of colour toners for a colour laser we have at the church.
