Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

First battery powered tools were expensive for what you got. Poor batteries and power relegated their use to small jobs. When LIon batteries and brushless motors appeared, the game changed. Range anxiety was solved by buying extra batteries but still they were much more expensive than corded tools. Convenience must have been worth it but if a sharp pencil was applied to the figures, I doubt they would really "Pay". Doesn't matter though because the dollar amounts were small enough to ignore.
EVs have two things working against them. Range anxiety perceptions for most areas keep folks from adapting to them. The biggest thing though, has been their cost. They have been out of reach for many who could most use their low cost of operation. When the new Tesla plant in Mexico comes on line and starts cranking 6,000 cars / week, that sell for $25K, the cost part will disappear for most. At that point, the convenience factor will kick in, as will the low cost of "fuel". In the first Quarter of 2023, the best selling car of any type was the Tesla Model Y. It outsold all the Toyota offerings so I think enough folks must have been convinced on safety, convenience, and cost of ownership to buy even though up front costs were higher. When Tesla starts advertising a $25K EV, it will be lights out for many legacy makers.
