Frost seeded some oats this year into cornstalks. Looks really good so far. Looks better than our winter wheat. Winter wheat had a tough winter. But the corn stalks caught the snow this winter and had some decent moisture. Most of snow this winter was horizontal. Last year we did the same thing but in bare ground. It did OK. Last year we just did to give our heifers something to graze on in the early spring and for that it worked fine. Oat seed was some leftover seed anyway and I decided to get a day in on the tractor in the winter instead of being inside or working with cows all winter. This year we intend to hay most of it to avoid having to buy hay again like we had to this year. That was costly. For us out in W Nebraska frost seeding is something to consider. By the time we finish corn or sunflower harvest winter has already sit in not leaving any time for cover crops or any planting at that time. We will typically get a few warmish days Feb or March when you can get a drill in the ground. |
