Subject: Frost seeded and general oat update

Latimer, Iowa (north central)
I frost seeded 108 acres of oats this year on march 30. Ground had a frozen crust about 1 inch and carried the tractor and seeder with seeder punching through the frozen layer. Went surprisingly well.

Was cold and dry for next 4 weeks until May and has warmed up and had about a 3/4 inch of rain total. We would consider it pretty dry for here but not a draught yet. 50 miles south of MN. border on I 35.

I also seeded about 500 additional acres of oats, same variety (reins), same seeder (1910/1890 Deere on 7.5 inch), same rate (3 bu an acre), similar ground (pattern tiled, 86-88 CSR, notill in bean stubble that had 2200 gallons hog manure VTI injected last fall). Seeded on April 8 and 9.

The frost seeded did not come up as well. Stand has been very uneven. High ground is the worst. There are full size oats and some just coming up. I debated about spraying off and planting corn but going to leave and see how turn out. They look better if the row was over a manure injector track, guessing soil was a little blacker and maybe into nutrients a little more.

The ones planted on April 8 and 9 look ok. Not as good as I would like but say that every year. Lack of moisture and the 20 degree weather slowed them up. Starting to pop now with warmth and some rain.

I will try and answer any questions, just posting in case someone else can learn or if someone can give advice on what we should do better. Or if think I should spray off the early ones and plant corn?? Right now I do not plan to frost seed again. Combine will tell truth though. If anyone wants to chat about oat markets or milling send me a message, I am working on what I consider a “big” project but not general public yet.

Edit to add: First 5 pics of frost seeded, next 6 of later planting. I took pics of worst spots in frost seeded. About 20% like that, 20% bit better, 50% ok, 10% good. Took average spots of later planted in 2 fields.
