Central Iowa
Interesting to watch your results. I was involved as a buyer in an oat buying program in Southern Iowa with Smithfield/PFI. Never got much traction but PFI was really pushing it with some of the food companies. There will be a sustainability play for sure down the road but it was too far south to grow decent oats down there. I'm still involved in ingredient buying for livestock so will be interested in your oat project. I've seen some of the benefits of oats on my own farm with some prevent plant 10 years ago. If I can get that 100-125 bushel yield and $5.00-6.00 oat price I'd likely try a 50-100 acre piece to either tile in late August or start manure application. Hope you can get that good yield with the later planting and goofy spring weather this year.
