The alternative is a perfectly dead calf (if your lucky, that's all) and a dead heifer or less likely cow.

Towards the genetics debate: No doubt breeding properly using CE bulls and building a high CEM cow herd can help reduce the need for C-section.

However, I would never fault a producer for being willing and able to successfully perform the surgery. Look we live in a environment of fewer and fewer large animal vets! If yours can't or won't get there in a timely basis, it can be the same as none. I simply do not understand anyone's discouraging comments when properly diagnosed, prepped and executed procedure started with proper training. And that is all the op asked to help find. Those comments assume the op is not aware that proper mating can help prevent the need for surgery. I really doubt that assumption.
