The people spec'ing 20+KW units are designing a system that will run every appliance in the house at the same time. If you know to only run one of the high amperage devices at a time (electric water heater, electric dryer, big well pump, big A/C system) then you can probably get away with something in the 10-12 KW size.

If your house is heated using electric heat, you'll need to pay attention to that load more carefully.



Most modern heating systems have a delay start
after power loss. If not it can be added very cheap.
This allows your house to function normally with
a lesser wattage generator.
I've said it before, most people purchase
more generator than is NEEDED.
A great electrician is your friend.
