| That works fine if you're using a regular generator where you can shut off the high amp use items before starting the generator, but with a standby you usually have less than 1 minute from the time power goes off till the standy kick in. You could install load sensing switches to time when things start up but generally you'll spend more going that way than buying a generator that will handle the entire load..
Best option IMO is to ve a qualified electrician do a load use check & purchase a generator that will handle the load. I had a pto generator from 1978 until 6-7 years ago when I had a stand by generator. My pto generator wasn't quite big enough to handle everything. My wife, like most women, thought as long as the house had electricity, whether from the power Co or the generator, it was business as usuall. I made sure our stand by would handle the old, same as If the power was coming in off the power lines. Cost wasn't that much more for a larger generator.
