We are in the grid sampling camp. Have done it for 45 yrs...or maybe it's 46 now.

If you have 2.5A grids, how can you not get every change in soil type or yield result in that field?

I suppose if you only had a 5 acre field with 4 soil types, you might have a case against grids. 



It can happen. 

Smart zonal approach mentioned above helps not to skip heterogeneous soil zones, but you'll need to invest time in zones creation and figuring out the logic. Does it makes sense?
