They are a wonderful dog if they are socialized when small and you spend a lot of time with them. They need to be kept busy and have room to run. I've had two and both different. Alice was very athletic and could jump over the closed tailgate of a pickup. She would bark like crazy if anyone came over, but want to be petted when they got out of the car. She was a great watchdog.
Lola, that I have now, is a full blooded cattle dog but seldom if ever barks. She is built stocky and not nearly as full of energy as Alice.
Cattle dogs are very loyal and just want to be around their owner. They are very smart and need to have things to do. They have lots of energy and need a place to run. The key, I think, is how they are socialized when young and how much attention you are willing to give them.
