North Central Illinois | Interesting on the weed pressure variation. I usually see the most weeds where there are tractor tire tracks.
I generally time my rotary hoeing more by GDU accumulation than days. My preferred time to hoe corn is the day before I can see rows, but I'll go sooner if weather is favorable and the forecast is calling for rain. Once corn gets 2 leaves I'll hoe again.
I bought a Kovar tine weeder this spring and am trying it out some. It fills in my guidance grooves, so I prefer to rotary hoe instead if I can still achieve good weed control.
The cultivator is really cleaning up that corn though. A well tuned cultivator can do a lot. I'm putting my Buffalo to work trying to clean up volunteer sunflower in my corn the last couple days. In the past I only had one major flush in April and early May. The cool spring must be delaying the emergence timing. Buying a flame weeder saved me from a total mess.
