| I think if I were building a new house, I would look at going with an inch or so of closed cell foam, and fill the rest with blown cellulose. From what I've been able to gather talking to a few company reps, you can't totally go by the R-value's, since foam is such a good air barrier. I think the industry talking point is that you can go with a 2x4 wall instead of a 2x6, one inch of foam and fill the rest of the wall with cellulose, and have a better insulated wall than a 2x6 with just the cellulose. There may be other reasons you want to go with a 2x6 wall though. Clear as mud?
Oh, my BIL works on HIGH dollar houses in the St. Louis area. He's working in a house now where they blew foam directly on the underside of the roof sheeting. He says you can't believe how much difference that has made in the attic temps.
