I have an old manual for mine also. Somewhere I saw that you turned the seed cups or hooked up the seed boots differently so you could see the seed falling from the back instead of from the front. My GP drill is so far back you couldn't see the seed drop even if they were pointed forward!
I've also heard that the horses sometimes had built in autosteer. They would learn to follow the rows!
