Subject: RE: Chev 950 with 6 cyl

If it is 1963 or later it's likely a 292. Back then GM colour coded the engines, the 292 was green. I think the 950 was considered a 2-ton while the 960 was a 3-ton. With the 2-speed axle it wouldn't be bad for power, I still have an old C50 Chev without the 2-speed axle and it used to be tough pulling out of a field with a load on. The 292's were tough old motors, long stroke so they didn't rev too high. Any of those old 6 cylinder GMs from the 60's I ever seen would start in the winter when nothing else would. The manifolds eventually crack and are nearly impossible to find, although some old combines had these motors so that might be a source. Also hard to get parts for the vacuum shift on the axle anymore, probably more so with GM titties-up.
By the way 1962 and earlier were the old stovebolts - 235 and 261, very little similarity to the 292's.
