What are you cutting for crops?
I've seen everything up to a bicycle go through! Not good for the rolls of course. I agree that the flails are simpler but I have yet to see a flail condition alfalfa better than a PROPERLY setup rubber conditioner rolls and retain the same amount of nutrients in the leaves.
