Too many growers, I believe, are of the concept that the zone/strip till equipment is to replace the FC or finisher machine.

When in fact, the process is a combination of no till and conventional till. The seed is placed in a conventional till type environment while gaining the benefit of residue on top and undisturbed soil struture in between the rows.

There are many different ways to achieve that as was demonstrated yesterday.

But one thing to remember, with any of the systems that were demonstrated yesterday, strip/zone tilling starts in the fall of the year right under the combine. Handling the residue is the #1 "visible" problem that many are concerned with. All the machines work at ground level and below, if that residue is concentrated at ground level, where the strip is going to be made, it will be more difficult. The more that is left standing, the less any machine needs to deal with.

It all depends on what YOU have to deal with on YOUR land, ie soil structure, soil type, fertility levels, available power, manpower and the list goes on and on. They will all work, the question one has to answer for themselves, is, which one will work best for ME.
