Wow, that is a real tragedy. Can't imagine how sick that would make a guy to loose the whole herd like that.

I'm guessing it must have been the lead though. Not nearly enough acid in a battery to kill 50 cows, let alone after it had been diluted with enough feed for all of them. Much more acid in silage.

We used to use a lot of sulphric acid for weed control on onions here. Concentrated it is nasty stuff, but once diluted with something like feed you wouldn't notice it. Same effect we use Phosphoric acid just before planting to lower the PH of alkali ground to plant alfalfa.
