Subject: RE: Tagging Calves

Eastern Iowa
If you tag every calf, every year the cows generally learn to expect it. I have seen some improvement in the groups since I have been doing this from first calf heifers onward, but I still have some old ones--you know which ones they are when you approach the yard. They get over their huff after a day or two when the calf gets moving around better, but you can't wait till then or you won't get the calf at all. They need to understand who is boss, and they mostly do.

Still, you keep one eye on the calf and one on mom.

I had one neighbor who had to keep an aluminum baseball bat with his tagger to deal with all his calves. That would get old pretty quick.
