My take. Most times not all is a reason they need pulled. Usually finer boned, staggy, limp, plain ugly etc. Most small barns don't sort enough for size or other reasons so buyer makes em. Now the sort off I don't like is the 1 red Angus or 1 dark nose char in a good group of cattle,but buyer wants all black.
Lots of those sort offs don't feed as well I know because I used to buy too many of them.
Yes when I sell yearlings I occasionally get one sorted off. If it's back very far I take home grow longer and butcher.
I used to think the same but the fat auction nearby ALWAYS sorts any color off and sell separate from black. And usually bring 10 cents a pound less. If they do it on the back end I guess I will do it at the feeder auction |
