The worst thing about the various sustainability studies, suggestions, and requirements for farmers is when they get hung up on a single aspect of sustainability.

Case in point -- it's really easy for a milk buyer to start requiring their dairies to cut electricity consumption. That gives them a cute little metric to judge their progress toward the goal. But when that reduction in electricity usage comes at the expense of over-complicated VFD's and sensor-driven machinery, and frequent expensive replacement of the same, it's clear that something is a whole lot less sustainable than it was before.
