Our vet said the same as northern grazer. Anything before 4 weeks is a waste of time and optimal is 8 weeks. We calve in March, vaccinate going to grass in may and boost in fall at weaning. Wondering if we shouldn’t do our cows annually also. Very little problems.
I do now. I lost maybe half a dozen cows and calves over the past decade before I switched to my current protocol (vaccinations at 8 weeks, which is when I do the cows as well, and boosters for the calves sometime pre-post weaning). I used to think there were just good healthy calves that randomly died in the fall of a "twisted gut" or "heart attack". Looking back those calves always died in pastures where I later confirmed I had blackleg. |
