It's a great area but yes it will be busy and my main advice is to not over-book your stay with things planned. Every drive takes 2x as long as you think it will for the miles!

We like the Lead/Deadwood area personally, there are a lot of nice VRBO's out that way depending on your group size and budget might be a good option. Definitely book a hotel or VRBO rental in advance unless you want to stay in a "rustic" motel or your car.

Keystone, 1880 train, UTV riding, Rushmore/Crazy Horse, all awesome. Needles highway is too much of a good thing for our family, and made for a long afternoon/evening we weren't planning on.
