Subject: RE: Seed Oils

A ketogenic diet does not necessarily mean you have to quit vegetable/seed oils. Really all a ketogenic diet, that puts a person in nutritional ketosis for much of the time, is nothing but a low carbohydrate diet. Cut the carbs enough, and a person will naturally be in ketosis with elevated ketone levels. The amount of carb reduction depends on the individual, but general numbers recognized by many people promoting it is that under 50 grams total (not net) carbs will get most metabolically healthy people in nutritional ketosis. You have already indicated you are not metabolically healthy by being over weight and even more specifically diabetic. Diabetes is a metabolic disease. Generally it takes levels of 20 or below total carb intake per day to get into nutritional ketosis. It may take a week of low carb intake before the body becomes at least partially "fat adapted" and ketone levels to rise. Wife and I try to stay under 20 for the past 4 years. It is pretty limiting, but in our case, well worth the effort.

But back to the vegetable/seed oils. That is a seperate issue but there are numerous doctors that claim seed oils are obesigenic as well as bad overall for the health. The idea is the high Omega 6 oils do not metabolize well for energy and instead get incorporated in the mitochondria cell walls and weaken the cells ability to function properly. I'm not going to argue it one way or the other, other than saying my wife and I cut out all of the oils we can just over 4 years ago and will not be using them in the future. I will put a link of two at the end of this post of some negatives supposedly about the oils. I say supposedly because you will find others that promote the oils as being healthy and will bring up their version of research to show such. A person just needs to listen to it from both sides all then decide for themselves. The food industry has a big stake in keeping the vegetable oils in the diet for numerous reasons. It basically has no nutrients, being only an energy source (whereas as the alternative, animal fats, do have essential fatty acids). We have been taught to avoid animal fats for so many years, most people are afraid to use them. It is my opinion that we have been subject to wrong information concerning fats for two or three generations now. Take my opinion for what you think it is worth. Others opinions will vary.

The almost entire trick to losing weight is to get insulin levels in the body low. Carbs raise insulin. Cutting them out lowers insulin. A person can not burn body fat in a state of high insulin. Insulin is a fat storage hormone, among other things.

I can't tell you what a low carb and or ketogenic diet will do for you. For my wife and I it has changed our lives much for the better. Loss of weight, loss of pain in joints, loss of need for decongestants/antihistamines, loss of skin tags, reduced blood pressure, quit 100 units of insulin in 4 shots a day, quit two diabetic drugs, quit blood pressure medicine, quit taking regular pain pills, probably more I have forgot. My hbA1c went from 6.9-7.0 down to 5.7-5.8, all without medication.

Everything positive, nothing negative other than I quit eating some of the foods I used to like. It is not so much of a diet as it is a lifestyle. If I went back to eating the way I was before, I would have to go back on insulin shots, back on medications, and would definitely gain back a bunch of weight. Taking insulin shots almost guarantees a 20-30# weight gain within a few months.

Low carb and cutting out seed/vegetable oils has worked for me. Others results may vary.

On the keto or low carb diet here are a few links. Pick a doctor you like and follow them. Watch their videos.

My opinions only. I'm not a doctor or researcher.
