Subject: Variable rate N theory

West Central MN
A question for those of you who are variable rate applying N in split applications.

When do you variable rate, and why do you do it that way?

As in, do you flat rate your preplant, and vary the side dress?
Or do you vary the preplant and flat rate side dress?

both corn and wheat

In our situation, we have Sandhills that can dry out, obviously leach, and will always be low production, but do we lower n rates and give up on them? Or would a higher rate at side dress timing hopefully be usable for the crop?

Also, how much variance to you use with your rates? +-25%? More than that?

Looking forward to any and all input on the subject.
