Subject: Winter pictures of the cows (pics)

Driftless SW Wisconsin

The cow group was about out of hay today (2.5% body wt/day hay consumption is working out very close) the temperatures and wind chills this past week have been very cold in SW WI as many of you know. About 15" of snow on the ground.

So I thought I'd give this female group a treat and unroll part of a roll on the ground for them before I put the rest in the feeder.  Looks like they got thru the cold week ok. Waterers working very well.

I have been told that based on my earlier pictures my cows were "too fat". However I think they look good considering the weather and that they will start calving in mid-March. My new Huth bull and a couple steers are in an adjacent pasture and I finally got a full side view picture of him. He has had no significant grain other than a few pounds for a treat once a week or so to keep him coming to me when I bang on the bucket.

Amazing how they can adapt to the weather conditions. They use the pines in the background for shelter. No roof ever over their heads until the trailer ride to the processor or sale barn.

This is a mix of cows and heifers. All are bred. Some folks tell me they enjoy seeing pictures, especially this time of year. Hard to believe how much you can sweat under a couple layers and coveralls even in this weather.  I am going to try to move the steers to grazing standing corn tomorrow and will post some pictures of that if things work out.

It's been a little over a month since weaning. Bags are going down. My oldest cow is in the center of one of the pictures. I think she is about 9 years old but not sure since I bought her from a friend who bought her from a guy on the other side of the county...

Heifers #24, 55, and 91 are registered as is bull 70.
