Presumably the forecasts have a distribution that can be calculated, but still the geographic distribution of the web will cancel out any over or unders.

In any case, it is not always steam that is used for "make up" to meet spikes in demand-instantaneous gas turbines can be up and running in minutes to fine tune the system.

As can variation in system voltage.

Wind power is a pretty poor source all things considered, but in my estimation it is the capital cost per produced KWHr that is the killer.

A comprehensive grid for electrical distribution provides benefits for all erlectrical generation. NA has an ageing grid that is undersized for current demands. The biggest benefits per $ spent will come from enhancement of the grid.
