Back in the day before computers, the cam grinding machine would use a "master" that is a finished cam to tell it what shape to grind on the new blank.. The master and blank are geared together so the lobe shape and position is exactly duplicated on the blank, as the grinding machine "reads" the shape and position of the lobes on the master cam and transfers that to the grinding wheel that shapes the new cam. After grinding, the lobes go through the hardening process and is ready to use.
The same principal of a cutting machine following the profile of a master,is used to shape everything from baseball bats to gun stocks.
