Our stalks won't decay any unless they are covered with dirt. We are also producing more per acre. 280 bu corn that is nearly 12' tall and if it was cut for silage it would make between 30-40 tons. A lot of the crops we grow can't tollerate much residue. For example this year I planted peas for processing after corn. The pea harvesters use stripper heads and stalks on the surface would be picked up by the harvester resulting in a big mess.
