Subject: Rain Gauge "Machinery"

Driftless SW Wisconsin

There was some discussion here earlier about rain gauges, both visual and electronic. I started thinking about rain gauges again watching the radar tonight. W WI could really use some rain whereas ND & SD really DO NOT need any more rain for awhile.

I am trying both types of gauges but the electronic ones tend to have the same old problems of batteries, wires or wireless. These are more demanding than the remote temperature sending units which can be mounted about anywhere. Rain gauges need to be located more carefully.

The visual gauge I have been using came from Forestry Suppliers, a very interesting catalog in print and on line.

It collects from a larger area and is easy to read even in small amounts on the inner tube. The feature I like best is that if you get more than one inch between being emptied, it stores the overflow until you can measure it later (by pouring it into the center tube as many times as necessary).
