I don't think the problem is the switch. I think you have a bad one way valve leading into your tank. The line coming out of the pump usually runs to a valve at the tank wall that allows air into the tank, but not back out. The little tire valve you are seeing is made to release the pressure in the compressor so it will start easier.
You can usually disassemble the one way valve and check for debris, but the odds are it's a bad seat. I don't know where you are, but most farm stores around here carry one way valves.
