Suggestion from last summer when I had a rear end on 9880 go bad. Mechanic told me to jack the rear end which you are questioning up so tires do not touch ground. Then try and wiggle the drive shaft where it enters the rear end. If there is play there then more than likely you will need to go into the differential. Is the differential leaking any oil from the seal where the drive shaft enters? That is what I noticed and why we started to investigate what caused the seal to go out.
