I have a JD 4020 that is draing the battery. I have put a test light on the ground post and cable so there is a current there. Where should i start looking? How do i check to see if it is the alt. or the voltage regulator? It is a later model diesel. All i have is a test light for testing. i know i should have a voltage meter. if i need one i can probly find one. Thanks guys.

You have a good start with the test light you are using. Keep it hooked up the way you have it and disconect the alternator wires and see if the light goes out. If it does, the current is draining into the component that you just disconnected. Also, Make sure that the alternaer wires are on in proper order. This can be done after you determine where you curtrent is going. Just keep disconnectiong stuff untill the light goes out. I rather doubt it it as bad spot in insulation that is drainig because it would have already melted down the wireing if it was the problem.
