Subject: Re: grain cart compaction

There are resources on-line that will give you an idea of total footprint (gross flat plate area) of various brands and sizes of tires. This info should be available from the manufacturer. But first a question... why even have tires on a grain cart? That said, the some of the first best investments to fight compaction are tracks on the grain cart and tracks on the combine. These are large, heavy vehicles (70,000 lbs and up), and (I forget the exact spec) university studies have shown that a very large amount of compaction that occurs happens in the fall from the combine and grain cart, so it makes a good deal of sense to start there first. Not only that, you'll be amazed at the difference in where you can go in the muddy years. Yes, we've all seen the pictures and even tracks can get stuck in the wrong spots, but there is a big difference in capabilities between tracks and any wheels. When looking at tires alone, don't forget about the pinch-effect that duals will have as well. The area in between the duals of the combine or grain cart is an area of concentrated compaction, something you don't get with a larger single tires. Food for thought.
