Grabill, Indiana | I am hearing more and more disatifaction with forages cut with disc mowers from dairy producers and nutritionists. The nature of the disc mower results in an increase in the Ash (read DIRT) content of the hay. This is caused by "plowing through gopher mounds" and the vaccuum effect of the spinning knives.
I have nutrient analysis of hay from one field, every other round was cut with either a NH 499 sickle Mower-Conditioner, or a disc mower. The hay cut with the disc mower had 20% greater ash content which decreased the nutrient value of the hay and therefore the Price of the hay.
