Subject: Re: Rotary Swathers

Pasco WA.
If I ran the swather myself I would own a rotary in an instant. I have demoed them a few times and it sure was hard to go back to the sickle machine. Your right they don't like dirt. Gopher hills and pivot tracks sure seem to cause them fits. They also require a better operator. I have cut at 13 mph with a rotary and done a beautiful job in standing alfalfa. I have also seen them struggle to run with a sickle machine in heavy down first cutting. For timothy the rotary is hands down the way to go.

Rotary's have just caught on here. The local dealer has gone from rarely ever selling one to over 50% rotaries in the last year. What I have not been able to find out yet is how the header upkeep compares to a sickle machine. I didn't expect to save any fuel, just assumed that fuel usage would be about the same. I am trying to factor labor, timeliness, and operating cost.
