4630 is less money because it's less tractor.
Main 40 series changes: quieter cab, hyd. seat, better lights, 466 engine, low-end torque is much better, way more iron in the a**end, not much diff. in hydraulics or A/C, 3spd. blower instead of 2. All 4840's are Powershift. To get a 48 QR, buy a 4640 QR & turn it up a little...a 4630 is not a bad ol' tractor, a 4840 is considerably more horse, if not too heavy for your application. It's a big hog. Around here, they are a heavy tillage tractor, some on 4x4 balers.
