So. IL
There will be a break-in period however it should not be as painful as you describe.

Are they too large and loose or too small and tight?

Are they too narrow or too wide?

Been wearing Red Wings for 25+ years. About seven years ago they started hurting my feet with each new pair. Finally figured out that my feet are getting wider with age. Went from a 10.5E to a 10.5EE and what a welcomed change. Almost no breakin when the size is correct.

Truth be told, my very last pair that I bought and am currently wearing are a 10.5EEE and they fit like a glove from day one.

With lace up boots you can compensate for boots that are a tad too large. With pull-on boots it is important to get the correct size from the start.
