I have done it with a DIESEL tank before. The exhaust air is actually isolated from the motor. Air that is pulled out of the tank does not go through the the motor. If it makes you really nervous your could evacuate the tank with exhaust from a vehicle and then vacuum it out of the oxygen free enviroment.
