Bought folks an Oregon Scientific several years back and friends have seen it and went and bought their own. To answer your question: Can they be used in freezing weather? yes. They dump each increment of falling moisture so there is nothing held inside to freeze. They reset at a preset time, and parents haven't figured out yet how to set the reset time. Right now it is midnight, and often they go to bed before that, so if it rains significantly between the time they go lights out and midnight, they just have to guess how much fell. There's gotta be a way, but I haven't been around it enough yet to play with it.
