I don't have any experiences in the lighter soils.

But I have to agree with you. "Here" anyway, anything less than 2" runs an extreme chance of brace roots not developing correctly, that greatly effects plant health in late July early Aug. Even later.

Drier years aren't quit as much of a problem due to the plant reaching deep for water setting up a decent root system. Get into a wetter year.... no need for deep roots and standability really becomes a factor.

It really depends on when it was wet...and when it was dry through out the year. But that crystal ball just doesn't work that well in the spring for what it will be like later on in the year.

2 - 2.5" depth will give you the best performance year in and year out over the course of time "here".
