Rock traps are optional. Down here in the south where I'm at, no one runs them, because we don't have many rocks. In other places, most will have them.
Most red combines don't run choppers, but you'll find some that do. Axial flow combines tend to tear up straw more than conventional combine anyway.

Like others have said, later model 2388's are a pretty refined design, and are generally very reliable. Here's a link with a history of changes to the axial flow design year by year.
