Subject: Packing silage MFWD vs 4WD

Woodham, Ontario
Just wondering what peoples opinions are on packing tractors. Got rained out of cobmeal so I have some time to ponder things.

Right now we have an 8120 with a loader that is used a lot for packing and also have a JD 544H payloader with duals to pack. The payloader can't push much, but it is pretty heavy. The loader on the tractor gives you a lot of control and the ability to groom the pile in reverse as well.

I have never run a 4WD with a blade, but it is obvious that the weigh a lot and can push a lot. They just seem really clumsy for many other jobs. My dad complains that the 8120 is too big... He just likes the 544H to pack with.

The blades on the large MFWD (8000, MX, TG, etc) are popular too, can they push close to what a 4wd can? ie 8430 with duals all around vs 9230? They will always weigh less, but are more versatile for other work and the 3pt and PTO come standard...

This year we added some weight, by just adding a NH TM190 to the pile and having 3 packing machines.

I know there are some people here that pack, what do you prefer?
