It's a common misconception that the RR gene is the only thing patented and keeping farmers from saving seed. Varieties and hybrids are patented. It is just as illegal to save non-GMO seed when the varieties are patented (and they all are) as it is to save RR seed, it's just that nobody is as willing to take the hard-core enforcement position against their customers except Monsanto.
