As you discribed, I'm guessing that the rye/fert was not completely mixed in the spreader and/or it settle out in transit. It could be the blender/fert plants lack of experence or could be sloppy work. I have routinly used 200 and 250 lbs of fert w/grain or alfalfa and have good results. I also lay out cardboard and do a check as they spread. Now, I perfer the half rate application and double back between the passes - more for piece of mind then even-ness. That's my opinion on your experence . . . .
