Subject: Why fall application?

Denmark
Hello Sakeller.

I am fully aware this may be a dumb question given the difference in climatic conditions between you and me.

In DK fall application of parts of the N quota to winter wheat has had lesser effect on the yield than spring application of our full quota.

We apply around 1/3 of the N in early March when the growth starts and the rest in late April. The full dose can also be applied medio April without hurting the yield much, but it can result in more straw.

When aiming at producing baking quality wheat a top dressing of N is applied very late but if we try for that production a permit has to be obtained from the authorities to buy the extra N and only certain wheat varieties qualify for getting this permit and it always require a contract with a grain dealer. Often this production still falls short of the protein requirements thus being unsuccessful.
