Camrose, Alberta | I just re-read an article in the July issue of "Top Crop Manager" about spraying winter wheat. It talked about 2,4-D fall vs. spring application and it concluded that the fall is the best option. In the sprting, a late application can cause crop injury (phenoxy damage - twisted heads).
The last two years I have used Frontline (MCPA Ester + florasalam). Both years its been tough to get on the fields when I need too and this year I sprayed on May 10. The wheat was big and so was the stinkweed (flowering), but the Frontline worked well. I did not see any classic phenoxy damage to the wheat, could there still have been some yeild lost from the late spraying? I plan to spray the winter wheat in October this year, with just 2,4-D Ester.
Its rarely just one thing, so maybe a loss of N and a late herbicide application caused my yield to decline.
Anyone have similar experiances?
