Here is a link to the PAMI research on the amount of fertilizer you can safely apply with the seed with various openers and crops.

I think that if you are using double shoot openers and not having any seed burning /emergence problems you should just keep doing what you are doing. The crop will find the fertilizer soon enough and you don't have to worry about damaging the seed with in row fertilizer.
